Erstmals seit der Ausgabe zum Jubiläum der Confessio Augustana im Jahre 1930 bietet dieser Band die Bekenntnisschriften der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche in einer kritischen Edition, die auf neue Quellengrundlagen zurückgeht und die Ergebnisse neuerer theologischer und geschichtswissenschaftlicher Forschung berücksichtigt. Die Texte werden im frühneuhochdeutschen bzw. lateinischen Original parallel geboten. Der textkritische Apparat weist unterschiedliche Lesarten nach, der sachliche bietet notwendige Informationen zum Verständnis der historischen und theologischen Zusammenhänge.
